About Me

Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

WASHINGTON, DC - STREET FEST

Street festivals are common and popular ways for cities, towns and neighborhoods to gather and celebrate as a community. It's a way to foster a sense of belonging, of togetherness.

Below was taken July 4th, 1996 on The Mall in Washington, DC. More than a hundred thousand people gather each year to watch the fireworks, and celebrate our country as a whole.

Sadly, two decades on it seems we need this sense of community more than ever, and are farther from it than ever before.
