About Me

My photo
Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

Pic of the Day: The Day the Queens Met

February, 2006. Cunard's massive then-new Queen Mary 2 sails into Long Beach Harbor to pay her respects to the original and iconic (some would say legendary) RMS Queen Mary, moored permanently in Queensway Bay. The ships exchanged blasts (both with the original Queen's horns, BTW -- the QM2 boasts one of her predecessor's units for good luck) and posed for pictures until it came time for the QM2 to sail on, having paid her proper respects.

Note:
In 2011 Cunard's Queen Victoria also sailed by to salute the Queen Mary, as did the RMS Queen Elizabeth in 2013 to continue what is now an important tradition.

This royal scene is to be extended today, February 5th, 2015, when the Elizabeth returns to Queensway Bay and formally docks for an official visit to Long Beach, adjacent to the original Queen. The event marks the 80th year of the Queen Mary's life, and the 175th year of Cunard ships sailing the seven seas.

It ought to be quite the scene.
