About Me

Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

Pic of the Day: Seeing the Drought

Last Fall we drove through the southwest on a trip from Monument Valley to Bryce Canyon, crossing the Colorado River in several places.

Quantifying a drought in your imagination is difficult when you only hear it on tv or the radio. "It's dry" doesn't carry a whole lot of weight, particularly when the tap still runs and the neighbor's lawn is green.

Then you see directly, as below, the obvious impact droughts have on water supplies and it's a throat-catching moment.

This shot was taken from atop a promontory above the Colorado, a few miles west of the town of Page, Arizona. The white wall reflects the previous average water level of the river. That's more than fifty feet above the current level of the river.

This is a major source of water for Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California, including the ever-thirsty Los Angeles basin.

I may be moving to Vancouver...
