Farmer's Markets, if you can work them into your itinerary, are often fun and fascinating ways to learn about a certain locale.
On one particular cruise we took through the Adriatic Sea, the ship's chef volunteered to escort a group of passengers to a market in the Croatian village of Rovinj. Several of the passengers immediately got into the swing of things by tasting local produce and talking to the Croatian farmers who were selling their wares.
