Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

MALIBU, CA - TIME OUT

Though this shot was made in Malibu, California, not far from the famed "Malibu Colony", it's a scene easily replicated millions of times a day around the world.

It isn't necessarily about bringing home dinner. Or making a living. Though for millions of people it may be exactly that. The art of fishing isn't just about the food. It's about the experience.

The art of escape. Of solitude. Of a moment away from the hustle and bustle. Just you, the sea and your fishing rod. Doesn't matter who you are, or may be, it's an experience everyone can appreciate.

(Even those of us who don't actually, you know, fish...)

THE DAILY ESCAPE: FISHING IN MALIBU

The fabled artists' colony of Malibu, just up the coast from West Los Angeles.

Despite the money, expensive homes and Hollywood personalities, there is always room for a quiet moment alone on the beach. Fishing. In jeans and a black t-shirt.

Just perfect.

Pic of the Day: Thinking Cold Thoughts

It's 5am as I write today's post. The outside temperature is 76F, with 87% humidity.

It's October 14th.

Can somebody please track down our missing Fall weather?

Tell it we miss it and want it to come home?

The Sunset Collection

One of the newer items we've added to the online store is a collection of five greeting cards featuring sunsets from California and Hawaii -- who doesn't like a beautiful sunset?

The central image was taken in Dana Point, a very upscale part of Orange County overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Clockwise from upper left we have a view from Ka'anapali Beach on Maui; a view across Queensway Bay in Long Beach. The lower right -- featured as a pic of the day just yesterday -- is Malibu. The the final lower left image is from the town of Kapalua, also on Maui.

Enjoy.

Pic of the Day: Malibu Sunset

On a day many, many years ago my wife had a gig at a private party in Malibu, the famous colony of entertainment types just northwest of Los Angeles.

Because of the nature of the gig I would not be able to stay at the party while she played. It happens sometimes, so I brought along my trusty Nikon and went down to the beach for some afternoon and sunset shots. The sunset that evening was stunning, adding some five photographs to my permanent portfolio. This is one.

(This is available as one of the Sunset Greeting Card Collection from my online store.)

ROAD TRIP: Malibu at Sunset

"Move to California. Malibu is paradise."
                                          - David Geffen

Every once in a while I'm simply going from place A to place B and not really focussing (*ahem*) on the local scenery.

Malibu, an almost legendary town up the coast from the LA metro area, is a nice place to visit, but unless you live there it's not really a destination in and of itself -- though the beaches on the west side of Point Dume are truly spectacular. (Point Dume is the large peninsula silhouetted in some of the below pictures.) Malibu is commonly viewed and marketed as a Hollywood colony, with a lot of film and television stars.producers.directors, etc, making their home along this quite beautiful stretch of the coastline.

In this case, as I was driving along the Pacific Coast Highway as I happened to catch a glimpse of some wonderful atmospheric conditions out over the ocean, which might yield a pretty special sunset. (I have hundreds of sunset and sunrise shots, so despite their obvious attraction they usually aren't a huge priority for me but I am happy to catch them as I find them.) There are, thankfully, any number of terrific vantage points along the PCH on this section of road. I pulled off and grabbed my Nikons, and managed to catch the area right at the point of sundown. Locals did me the courtesy of walking through the scene -- and in one case, kayaking through it -- allowing me to add that "human" note to the scene in a lot of the shots.

Unlike my usual posts, I'm going to offer the rest of the pictures without much comment. I hope you enjoy this short distraction of a beautiful Malibu Sunset.
