About Me

My photo
Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

Pic of the Day: Art Deco

I am a real fan of art deco architecture and design. The lines, the ornamentation and yet austerity of the movement. Structures such as the Chrysler Building in New York, the Delano Hotel in Miami, or the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles area experienced a growth spurt in the 1920s, '30s and '40s when the style was popular. As a result the city and its surrounding communities have dozens of fantastic examples of the design, including City Hall, The Eastern Building and Union Station.

This is a walkway along the hillside of the Observatory. It overlooks the city with tremendous views of downtown LA, Hollywood and, on a clear day, the entire LA Basin (an area with roughly equivalent square mileage as the state of Rhode Island).

Pic(s) of the Day: Evening at the Theater

Whether we're at home or on the road somewhere, my wife and I love live entertainment. Plays, musicals, bands, orchestras, even a smartly talented (but not pushy) busker plying their trade.

This last weekend we went up to Hollywood to see NEWSIES at the stunning Pantages Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. It's an Art Deco gem which adds so completely to the "eventfulness" of the evening that the theater itself becomes a draw.
