Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

AMERICAN HISTORY - TAOS PUEBLO, NEW MEXICO

Native Americans are a core part of American history, with their experiences ranging from the depths of our worst inhumanity to their own characterization of our best humanity.

I have worked with Native Americans on numerous occasions and they are truly an as-yet unrealized aspect to our history and asset for our collective tomorrow. The Taos Pueblo, in north central New Mexico, is one of the oldest continually-occupied cities in America.

The feel for the past is palpable.

TAOS, NM - THE DRAGONFLY CAFE

Anybody who reads this column regularly knows I love finding cool little eating places with a distinct personality and a high quality of food. If you really want to get a feel for a place, find the local breakfast joint.

Even if it's not breakfast time.

Grab a meal and sit for an hour watching and listening to the people around you. This tells you more about a place and its people than just about anything else. And also fills you up for the next stage of your journey.

This is one of my favorites. Eating at the Dragonfly in Taos, New Mexico, is like eating a pleasant meal in your friend's dining room. If your friend happens to be an excellent cook, that is. Or on their patio if you prefer to eat outdoors.

AFTER POSTING THIS I HAVE DISCOVERED THE DRAGONFLY IS NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED. BIG LOSS. FOR A BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION YOU MIGHT ENJOY READING THIS ARTICLE.)

Pic of the Day: Taos Pueblo

A couple of doorways into residences of the ancient and still vibrant Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico. The town is known for its arts, while the Pueblo itself stands as a monument to the Native Americans who first inhabited the region -- and still do.
