MGM Resorts' massive CityCenter complex, sans Harmon Tower. A separate property, The Cosmopolitan, rests in the background. Both projects have storied histories in the relatively short time in which they have existed.

In their own way a microcosm of financial excess run amok -- and yet both are now turning the corner and part of the establishment. They broke the rules and very nearly the bank.
