About Me

My photo
Welcome to the online blog for traveler/writer/photographer Steven Barber. Come in. Relax. Take off your shoes and socks -- or any other article of clothing, this is the internet. Have a look around. I hope to intrigue, amuse, entertain, and maybe provoke you just a little. I love to find adventure. All I need is a change of clothes, my Nikon, an open mind and a strong cup of coffee.

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME -- ARTISANS CO-OP

While this image nearly a decade and a half old, this little shop still exists as the Boothbay Harbor Artisans Co-op on the "downeaster" side of Maine, a beautiful little town on the coast.

I'm a sucker for shops and towns like this, but also had the very best fish sandwich (cod)
in my life at a little cafe around the corner.

CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK CITY - THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES

You're in one of the most dynamic and energetic cities in the world, and want some alone time.

Where do you go? Central Park. Even in New York, there are escapes from the madding crowd.

The pause that refreshes.

INTERCOURSE, PENNSYLVANIA - RIDE AROUND TOWN

I'm working through another major recovery from the 35mm archives and
ran across this shot of a local horse and buggy ride in Pennsylvania.

In the small Amish community of Intercourse they have built a thriving tourist industry based upon shopping, Amish lifestyle demonstrations, and the occasional ride around town.

HUATULCO, MX - SHADOW OF THE CRUISE SHIP

The cruise industry can play a tremendous role in the development of a nation and a region. A newly re-emerging economy, such as violence-torn Croatia or Guatemala or Colombia, the visit of cruise ships and their passengers' wallets can give a strong boost from a financial standpoint, as well as raising the hopes of a beaten-upon populace.

Below is a giant cruise ship tied up on the dock in the town of Huatulco, Mexico, one of many areas feeling the economic growth from tourism. Unlike airports, a cruise dock can be built relatively inexpensively, and provides a quick-shot stimulus a region can build upon.

Handled properly, it's a good thing.
